Pet Bicycle Trailers!

Pet bicycle trailers are an excellent way to maintain an active and safe lifestyle with your pets. Attaching the trailer to your bicycle takes just a few minutes and is much safer for both you and your pet than attaching a leash and hoping you or your pet don’t get tangled up. During hot weather, allowing your pet to ride in the trailer will save the pads of their paws from being exposed to the hot asphalt or concrete.

Pets love to spend time with their people but some can’t run or walk for the same length of time as their people so this bicycle trailer is a perfect alternative. It allows you to spend quality time with your pet while you enjoy the benefits of a physically active lifestyle. The open weave mesh on the windows allow for the wind to blow through the unit so your pet can experience the great outdoors to it’s fullest. Most trailers will also come with a vinyl window cover to protect your pet from the sun.

Before purchasing a pet bicycle trailer look for features such as:

  • easily attaches to your bicycle;
  • storage compartments for extra treats or water bottles;
  • can be folded down for easy storage; and
  • water proof floor boards.
  • The trailers come in a variety of colors and sizes, some can accommodate dogs up to 110 pounds. You can add their favorite blanket and some toys to the inside of the trailer before you start your journey to guarantee both you and your pet will have an excellent time on the trip.

    Pet Water Fountains

Pets are just like their human companions and need plenty of water on a daily basis.  Pet water fountains are designed to constantly provide fresh, clean water to keep your pets healthy.  Of course, you could simply put down a bowl of water and keep filling it up.  The problem with that solution is the water gets stale and dirty which defeats the purpose of clean water for your pets.

Pet water fountains are designed to cycle water to keep it fresh which in turn encourages your pets to drink more water during the day.  You will probably need to clean the fountain at least weekly depending on the temperature in the area where it is located because of the growth of bacteria.  The fountains also have a filter system which removes bad tastes and odors.  The filters will need to be replaced probably at least once a month.  The frequency for cleaning the fountain and replacing the filters is going to be based on how much dirt, hair or food gets dropped into the water.

Most of the water fountains are very easy to set up and get running.  There are typically adjustments that control the amount of water flowing out of the spout.  Depending on whether your pet likes to drink out of a fountain or not, you might need to make several water flow adjustments before you get the flow for your pet.

Depending on the size of your pet, the daily recommended water intake ranges from around five ounces for small pets up to one hundred ounces or more for larger animals.  A pet water fountain is an excellent solution to guarantee your pets are drinking plenty of clean, fresh water.

    FURminator deShedding Tool

Anyone who owns a long haired dog or cat or even short haired breeds understands the importance of pet grooming. The FURminator deshedding tool is a specially designed pet grooming brush that stops the shedding where it begins, the undercoat of your pet.

The undercoat of your pet is where the majority of loose, dead hair is located and is the major source of shedding. The hair that is shed can also cause allergies and cleanliness problems so a good grooming program is essential. The FURminator quickly and easily removes the loose undercoat hair without damaging the topcoat. It will stimulate your pet’s natural body oils which in turn will leave a shiny and healthy topcoat.

For a complete grooming program, use FURminator deshedding shampoo and conditioner for dogs and cats along with the deshedding tool. This shampoo and conditioner is designed to help remove loose hair and to strengthen the hair shafts which will decrease shedding. Depending on the amount of hair your pet has, you might need to groom them at least once a week until you can slow the shedding process. If your pet has hair that is matted, you’ll want to trim or clip the matted hair before you give them a bathe. Make sure you rinse all the shampoo off at the end of the bath so your pet doesn’t develop hot spots. Finish off the grooming session by blow drying your pet’s hair until it is almost, but not quite dry. Over drying your cat’s or dog’s hair will also dry out their skin which could cause other problems.

As you can see the grooming process is going to take some time and is an excellent way of spending quality time with your pet. The FURminator deshedding tool makes grooming more enjoyable for both you and your pet.

    Family Pet Emergency Plan

    Pet Emergency First Aid Kits

Natural disasters can happen anywhere, at any time and sometimes with very little warning. A family pet emergency plan will allow you to be prepared and to act quickly if there is an emergency. There are a few steps that you can take to get a pet emergency plan in place which will reduce the level of stress and worry for both you and your pets.

Put together a pet emergency supply kit. This kit should include the following items:

    • A pet first aid kit which should include any specific medication that your pet is required to take on a regular basis
    • A 3 day supply of food and water (these should be stored in water proof containers)
    • Collars with current and up-to-date ID tag information. If your pet has a micro-chip, include that information in case you and your pet get separated
    • Safety harness and leash
    • Sanitation items
    • A current photo of your pet
    • A favorite toy or blanket to take with your pet if you have to evacuate your home
    • A traveling crate or carrier.

If your pet is not familiar with being inside a pet crate or carrier, get them used to it by placing treats and toys inside and letting them climb in and out.  Unfortunately, most pets associate being in a crate or carrier as a sure sign of going to visit the veterinarian which is typically not a pleasant experience.  Letting them play and snack inside of the crate can help reduce their fear.  You also might want to load them in the crate the next time you take them on a fun adventure to help ease their fear.

You should know all your pets favorite hiding places in your house if your pet is the type who likes to run and hide at loud noises or the first sign of trouble.  You should designate a room to place your pet in if you are given warning of a potential disaster headed your way.  This will decrease the amount of time you have to spend looking for your pet and getting prepared to leave your home if necessary.

Prior to a natural disaster occurring, map out a get away plan that includes how you’re going to pack up your pets, getting their supply kit and where you plan to go.  Check to see if there are nearby shelters, veterinary hospitals and motels that will take your pets in an emergency.  If you can’t find any shelters or motels that will allow pets, ask your family and friends if they would be willing to take care of them for a short period of time.  A family pet emergency plan only takes a short period of time to develop and could save your pets life in the event of an emergency.

    Pet Halloween Costumes

Halloween can be a fun and scary time for both you and your pets.  You need to be aware of the dangers of pet Halloween costumes if you are planning on dressing your pet in a costume.  Some of the things you need to look for are:

    1.        The costume should be easy to get on and off of your pet.  The ideal pet costume should slip over their head and then fasten around their body.  This way you don’t have to bend and twist your pet to get the costume on or off.

    2.       The costume should fit securely, but should allow for easy removal if your pet gets upset or needs to get out of the costume fast.  It needs to fit snuggly enough so that it doesn’t slip off and cause a tripping hazard for your pet.

    3.       The costume should not block your pet’s vision.  If your pet’s vision is blocked, they could panic and become aggressive.  The costume should also allow your pet to easily breathe and hear.

    4.       The pet costume should not have small parts that your pet can reach and possibly chew off.  Small objects that can be pulled or chewed off could cause a choking hazard.

    5.       You want to make sure that your pet’s back side is not blocked because you can guarantee they will need to use the bathroom while they are in the costume.  Costumes that end at the waist are usually your best bet for avoiding messes and issues.

Keeping these dangers of pet Halloween costumes in mind, you and your pet should have a great Halloween.  Your pet will receive a lot of attention in their costume and as long as they’re comfortable, they might be willing to try it again next year.
